Novice Field Class Descriptions
The “Novice Field” classes, in order of difficulty are as follows:
Novice: Only handlers that have never competed in an Open class may compete in the Novice class. The Handler /Dog team may not have competed in any class higher than Novice. This class is reserved for the least experienced handlers and dogs and consists of a short (generally less than 150 yards) outrun, lift and fetch, wearing the sheep through one or more obstacles, and a pen.
Pro Novice: Any handler may compete in the Pro Novice class. The Handler /Dog team may not have competed in any class higher than Pro Novice. The course generally consists of a moderate out run (generally less than 200 yards), lift and fetch, driving one or two obstacles (e.g., drive one panel and pull-through the fetch panel) and a pen.
Open Ranch: Any handler may compete in the Open Ranch class. The Handler /Dog team may not have competed in any class higher than Open Ranch. The course is generally a full Open course without a shed, generally with a shorter outrun than Open. (At the Bluegrass, Open Ranch is not run on the Open course so the outrun and drives are much shorter than the Open class.)
Nursery: Any Handler/Dog team meeting the USBCHA Nursery eligibility requirements may compete. The course will be the same as the Open Ranch course.
